Covid: Worlds Tallest Scraper Shows Solidarity For Spain

This is the moment the world’s tallest building in Dubai is lit up in the colours of the Spanish flag in a show of solidarity amid the escalating spread of coronavirus in the country.

The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on the planet, in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was lit up in the colours of the Spanish flag and the message ‘este virus lo paramos unidos’ (together we will stop this virus’) and ‘gracias profesionales sanitarios’ (‘thank you healthcare professionals’).

Footage of the show of solidarity was shared on Twitter by the Spanish Embassy in UAE where it has gone viral with over a million views.

The Spanish Embassy accompanied the video with the message: “The tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa in Dubai pays tribute to Spanish health professionals in these difficult times. Thank you United Arab Emirates.”

According to local media, the building was previously illuminated in the colours of the Spanish flag on 12th October 2019 to mark Spain Day.

Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 with the exterior completed five years later in 2009. The primary structure is reinforced concrete and the skyscraper was opened in 2010 as part of a new development called Downtown Dubai.

To its tip, the skyscraper stands at a height of 829.8 metres (2,722 feet).

As of 20th March, there have been 18,077 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Spain and 833 deaths.
