This is the moment a couple who have been married for over 50 years hug after being reunited in hospital where they are being treated for coronavirus.

The moving images of the couple, named Giorgio and Rosa, who have been married for 52 years, were taken by the hospital of Cremona, in the northern Italian region of Lombardy as they were reunited after being treated in separate wards of the facility for coronavirus.

Manuela Denti, Coordinator of Gynecology at the hospital told local media: “Giorgio is one of those people who always wants to touch other”. Denti said Giorgio never complains but had confessed he was sad when he was first hospitalised alone because he wanted to go home to his wife.

Rosa was hospitalised some days after her husband and when her condition improved her doctor agreed to organise a surprise reunion for them after days apart.

Denti said: “It was one of those moments that cannot be forgotten. We could not avoid breaking into tears. It as a long hug, full of sweet words, ten minutes of tenderness and the hope of guaranteeing their health.”

It is unclear if the pair, who were being treated for pneumonia caused by coronavirus, remain hospitalised in the same room.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Italy has registered 162,488 cases of COVID-19, with 21,067 deaths.
