A man suspected of having COVID-19 has fallen to his death while trying to escape from a third-floor hospital window by using tied bed sheets.

The incident took place at the Puerto Real University Hospital in the port city of Cadiz located in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia.

The 65-year-old man, who has not been named, was reportedly admitted to hospital due to an oncological disease that required surgery.

However, pre-operation tests suggested that the patient may be infected with COVID-19, but this could not be confirmed before his passing, according to local media.

The man knotted several bed sheets together to fashion a makeshift rope that he dropped out of the third-floor window to climb down.

He was reportedly admitted in a ward known as ‘the COVID floor’ where virus patients are currently being treated.

Medical staff on the early-morning shift found the man alive after his fall, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

It is unclear why he attempted to escape, however local media said that the news of possibly having COVID-19 combined with his oncological disease may have affected his state of mind.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University Spain has reported 174,060 cases of the virus leading to 18,255 related deaths.
