COVID: Customer Finds Surgical Mask In Takeaway Meal

This picture shows a grease-covered surgical mask allegedly found inside a couple’s restaurant takeaway meal.

Mr Yang and his wife, from Shanghai in East China, told Chinese media that they ordered the dish from the Yuxin Sichuan restaurant on Jiujiang Road.

The meal, which included a box of Sichuan boiled fish, came to 115.3 RMB (13.79 GBP) and was sent to their home by online delivery platform Eleme on 20th March.

Mr Yang said he and his wife were halfway through their meal when they discovered the one-time use surgical mask, which had been submerged in the fish broth, and which was covered in oil and fat.

He complained to the restaurant, which refunded his meal and offered him a further 500 RMB (60 GBP) in compensation.

Mr Yang said he rejected the extra payment.

Restaurant manager Mr Wu said his cook’s failure to notice the mask was an “oversight”, but he denied the business was to blame for the mask appearing inside the broth.

On 22nd March, Mr Wu told local media: “Our investigation showed no problems in the food-making process. We don’t know how the mask ended up in the meal.

“We did not offer to compensate the customer as an admission of guilt.”

Mr Yang said he has asked for a formal apology from the restaurant, and also filed a complaint with the city’s food regulators.
