This is the centenarian coronavirus patient who is thought to be the oldest individual in China to recover from COVID-19 symptoms and be released from hospital.

The sprightly man named only as Mr Dai is 101 years old and was quarantined on 25th February shortly after his birthday following a positive diagnosis of the novel coronavirus.

Mr Dai was treated at the Guanggu Branch of Wuhan Third Hospital in COVID-19 epicentre Hubei Province in Central China.

On 4th March, Mr Dai was given a clean bill of health and discharged from the hospital following eight days of treatment for non-critical symptoms..

The patient, who was among patients most at risk of succumbing to the pneumonia-like disease, told local media he was eager to return home in order to take care of his wife, who is 92.

The hospital said Mr Dai was “energetic and sharp” as he walked out of hospital without assistance.

In order to stay fit, the pensioner reportedly strolled back and forth while living in an isolation room, and his doctors say he was capable of caring for himself.

Li Lai, the hospital’s head nurse, said about the now healthy centenarian: “The thing he said the most during his stay was: ‘I can do it myself.’

“Because of his old age, health workers paid special attention to his needs, but they soon discovered Mr Dai was able to eat, drink and wash up by himself.”

Mr Dai is now undergoing a period of mandatory isolation and will be tested against to confirm he has been cured of the disease.

On 1st March, China’s oldest critically ill coronavirus patient – aged 98 – reportedly recovered from the disease and was discharged Leishenshan Hospital in Wuhan together with her daughter, 54.

She was among five family members infected with COVID-19 and placed in quarantine treatment on 13th February.

An overwhelming amount of coronavirus deaths have been recorded in patients above the age of 80.

While the mortality rate for COVID-19 remains at just above 2 percent, the figure for those above 80 jumps to 15 percent.

As the coronavirus surges in Europe and North America, 3,285 deaths have been reported worldwide, with 2,902 of those in mainland China alone.
