A council worker has inadvertently killed a three-year-old boy by accidentally running over him with a huge commercial lawn mower.

The unnamed street maintenance worker was trimming the grass on a roadside on Gagarin Street in the city of Karasuk in the Russian federal subject of Novosibirsk Oblast this week (Thursday, 26th August) when the horrific incident unfolded.

According to the local Investigative Committee, the man ran over the young boy after he failed to notice him on the roadside. The youngster received serious injuries in the accident and tragically died at the scene.

Following the incident, investigators were immediately dispatched to the scene to collect evidence and question eyewitnesses in order to establish how the incident could have occurred. The victim’s body was also taken for a post-mortem examination.

The local Investigative Committee subsequently opened a criminal case into the boy’s death under the suspected crime of ‘violation of safety rules while carrying out work, resulting in the death of a person by negligence’.

It is unclear whether the boy was unattended or whether his family was present at the time of the fatal accident. Neither he nor his relatives were named by local media.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
