Police officers were stunned to see this speed camera photo of a speeding lorry seemingly with no driver behind the wheel.

The unusual speed camera picture was shot in Essen, a city in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The lorry was snapped as it was driving 21 kph (13 mph) above the 50 kph (31 mph) speed limit on the road.

However, when cops got the photo in their hands to process the administration of the fine they were surprised not to see a driver in the lorry cabin.

A police spokesman said: “Of course, the photographed vehicle was not driven by a ghost.

“Rather, the driver tried to escape punishment by diving down in his cabin at exactly the right moment.”

The driver reportedly thought he could perhaps claim that the lorry was being driven by someone else if he were not recognisable in the speed camera photo.

The police spokesman said: “He apparently did not think that the number plate alone would allow us to determine the owner and driver.”

The bungling lorry driver can now expect an even higher punishment as the cops are investigating whether or not he endangered other road users with his stunt.

The police spokesman said: “He also endangered the traffic by taking his view away from the road.

“During this time, the lorry covered about 100 metres (328 feet).”

According to the Essen Police their investigation is still continuing and no final punishment has been determined yet.
