These are the first images of a man who cops believe pummelled a lone female pedestrian on her way home before he allegedly sexually assaulted her sparking a nationwide manhunt.

The incident, which has been widely discussed on social media and by state-run media outlets in mainland China, came to its first conclusion on 25th June when authorities announced the arrest of a suspect surnamed Wang, aged 31.

Police in the port city of Dalian, in north-eastern China’s Liaoning Province, said Wang drunkenly attacked pedestrian Ms Wu, aged 29, on 22nd June and then sexually assaulted her.

However, further details about the apparently sexually motivated attack have not been revealed.

A statement by the Dalian Public Security Bureau said Wang has admitted to the offences, claiming he carried out the drunken attack shortly after an argument with his own girlfriend. It is unclear how the police tracked him down.

Harrowing CCTV footage from Cangshan Road in Dalian’s Ganjingzi District showed pedestrian Ms Wu walking home and coming face to face with a man at 12:44 am local time on the day of the incident.

She is immediately attacked and continues to be punched and kicked in the face for over a minute before the man drags her limp body out of frame after partially pulling her skirt and underwear down.

Members of the public have also called into question a previous statement by Dalian police, who claimed the victim suffered only “facial soft tissue injuries” from the attack – despite the violent and distressing scenes showing in the viral security footage.

An unnamed doctor with the accident and emergency department at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University revealed to local media that the woman’s face was “completely swollen” when she took herself to the facility roughly an hour after the attack.

She paid for her own treatment before being discharged, hospital records from the night show.

Ms Wu told investigators she did not know her attacker.

The public is calling for the harshest possible punishment for the suspect Wang, while police are still investigating the case. He is not believed to have been charged yet.
