Cops Arrest Mum For Injecting Heroin While Giving Birth To Child, Who Died A Short While Later

Cops have arrested a mother for injecting herself with a “large” dose of heroin while giving birth to her baby, who died shortly afterwards.

Paramedics and cops were called to an address in Mobile County, in the southern US state of Alabama, on Saturday, 5th March, following reports of a newborn in distress.

First responders are reported to have found 34-year-old Amanda Malpas with “the needle still in her arm” while she held her newborn.

The baby, whose sex was not reported, was reportedly “barely conscious” and was “struggling to breathe” when emergency service workers arrived on the scene.

Paramedics took the newborn to the Ascension Providence Birthing Center. However, despite resuscitation attempts, it succumbed barely over an hour following admission.

The suspect claimed to the cops from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office that she had self-administered “a large dose of heroin” to combat pain during labour.

However, she is also reported to have admitted to the police that she used heroin and methamphetamine throughout her pregnancy.

She was remanded in custody on 17th March and charged with chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death.

She reportedly faces her charge being upgraded to encompass murder following the conclusion of the toxicology report.

The maximum penalty for chemical endangerment in Alabama is life imprisonment.

Her arraignment is scheduled at Mobile County District Court on 23rd March.
