This is the moment armed cops handcuff a suspect on the ground after he reportedly tried to rob the supermarket in Madrid while brandishing a large kitchen knife.

The unnamed suspect allegedly used a knife to threaten supermarket staff and customers in the neighbourhood of La Latina in the central Spanish capital Madrid.

According to local media, a 22-year-old Angolan man went into the supermarket at 4.40 pm while armed with a kitchen knife.

The suspect reportedly threatened clients and staff members during the robbery attempt, but some customers managed to run outside and inform the police.

The footage shows the moment armed officers of the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) arrive at the supermarket.

One cop appears to be holding an assault rifle while another has a riot shield and a truncheon at the ready.

In the second video, the two cops are seen cuffing the suspect on the ground as he initially appears to resist arrest.

However, one cop kneels on the Angolan man’s back as his colleague places the handcuffs on the suspect’s wrists.

According to reports, no one was injured during the robbery attempt.

It is currently unclear if the detained man has been charged yet.
