A 29-year-old man has been arrested for helping his brother kill his ex-girlfriend on her 18th birthday just hours after she posed for this photo holding her cake.

The crime took place shortly after the young woman’s birthday party was interrupted by her ex-boyfriend on 18th July last year.

Azelia Barbosa’s angry ex turned up uninvited at her family home in Brazil and threatened to break everything inside if he did not get to speak to the young woman. She left the house to try to calm him down, but did not return.

A farmer called the police when he found her charred body in a trough on his farm in the Brazilian municipality of Itacarambi the following day.

The 31-year-old suspect’s brother was arrested 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the crime scene some seven months after the crime on 18th March. He is accused of helping his brother kill Azelia.

Both men are accused of beating and abusing the victim before killing her, burning her dead body, and dumping her charred remains in a trough on a local farm.

According to the police, the 29-year-old brother drove from the victim’s home to the farm where she was then killed.

Officers believe Azelia’s ex, whose identity has not revealed, premeditated the crime with the help of his brother in ‘revenge’ for her breaking up with him.

Both brothers are currently in preventive detention awaiting trial.
