An Argentine cop has been arrested for shooting his ex-lover in the head at close range in front of her husband after stopping the couple’s car on the road while on patrol.
Victim Claudia Gonzalez, 29, was killed while travelling to the town of Alcorta in the northern Argentine province of Santa Fe with her husband in a blue Peugeot 307 on 18th September.
Her former lover, police officer Ivan Jesus Leguizamon, 28, is accused of shooting her in the temple after recognising her car while on patrol and chasing after her with blue lights flashing.
The victim, who was a police cadet training at the provincial Institute of Public Security (ISEP), was married to Marino Milevich, 63, and they have an eight-year-old son together.
However, Gonzalez, who lived in the city of Villa Canas in Santa Fe Province with her family, separated from Milevich for a while, and started seeing the suspect.
Gonzalez, who dreamed of being a policewoman, had however then reunited with her husband several months ago, allegedly leaving Leguizamon heartbroken.
The couple was driving to Alcorta and were almost 100 kilometres from their home city of Villa Canas to see a trailer for Milevich’s lorry. Gonzalez used to accompany her husband, a lorry driver, on some of his road trips.
According to the news site Cronica, Leguizamon spotted the couple’s car as they were travelling past his Road Safety post and he chased after them in a patrol car with two colleagues.
With sirens blaring, the cop stopped the couple’s car and walked over to the door where the victim was seated.
He reportedly asked her to come back to him before drawing his service weapon and shooting her in the temple at close range after she refused.
The accused officer then turned his weapon on the victim’s husband, who he had repeatedly fined on the road whenever he saw him driving his lorry, but no shots were fired, according to reports.
It is unclear if the firearm jammed or he had a change of mind, however Leguizamon is also charged with attempted murder over the encounter with Milevich.
Leguizamon has been arrested with his colleagues Jonatan Rojo, 28, and Mario Aguero, 24, who failed to intervene and are accused of being ‘secondary participants’.
The investigation is ongoing.
