A cop has been arrested for killing his ex-partner in front of her 7-year-old son after she collected him from school.
The femicide in the city of Resistencia, in the north of the country on Friday afternoon (24th February).
According to local reports, the victim Micaela Corvalan had been having lunch at home with her ex-partner when he fatally shot her at close range.
The 27-year-old woman died on the scene, while her son was left traumatized by the violent attack.
The suspect identified as police officer Roman Gutierrez fled the scene but was later arrested by police in a nearby town. He is currently in custody and is expected to face charges of femicide, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment in Argentina.
He reportedly worked as a police officer in the Argentine city of Santiago del Estero and his former partner was a kindergarten teacher.
The femicide has sparked outrage across the country, with many calling for action to be taken to address the issue of domestic violence.
Argentina has one of the highest rates of femicide in the world, with an estimated one woman killed every 32 hours, according to government data.
The country’s president, Alberto Fernandez, has promised to take action to tackle the problem, including the introduction of a national emergency plan on gender-based violence.
However, critics have accused the government of not doing enough to protect women from violence, with many calling for greater resources and support for victims of domestic abuse.
