These twins who were born conjoined at the head have returned home to Turkey after 10 months in London where surgery to separate them was a success.

Twins Yigit and Derman, who are nearly two years old, were flown back to their home country in an ambulance plane sent by the Turkish Health Ministry after their series of rare operations and recovery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Their father Omer Evrensel said he and his wife Fatima were “happy” to be able to return to Turkey with “healthy children”.

He revealed that they had been recommended to abort the pregnancy once the twins’ condition became clear from scans but the parents never agreed, saying: “We were ready to live with that condition, but Allah showed us a path, gave us a remedy- we are thankful.”

The twins were born in in the Mediterranean city of Antalya on 21st June 2018 and were sent to the UK after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally intervened in their case, arranging for their travel.

They have undergone three specialist operations by a team of medics including prominent neurosurgeon Noor ul Owase Jeelani, finally being separated on 28th January.

They have since been recovering and undergoing further treatment at Great Ormond Street.

Their father said after the operation: “When I saw them separated, I burst into tears. This was our only dream. Now they can play, do whatever they want, like their peers.”

According to the National Health Service (NHS), only one in every 2.5 million births produces conjoined twins, with only five percent of these being conjoined at the head.
