Prosecutors are investigating allegations that an estate agent infected an elderly millionaire with COVID-19 in order to steal his land.

Unmarried, childless Erdal Yenisoy passed away in the Turkish capital Ankara at the age of 78 on 8th May last year.

His five cousins, who hardly saw him in life, only found out he was deceased when the Tax Office in Fethiye, south-western Turkey, asked them to pay his unpaid taxes.

While doing their own digging, the cousins found out that the land their relative had bought decades earlier in the Faralya neighbourhood – then just a village – had been sold.

The land was now worth TRY 200 million (GBP 9.3 million).

They found out that an estate agent named Haydar Y., whom Yenisoy had given power of attorney, had allegedly sold the land to an individual named Necati E. for TRY 20 million (GBP 930,000).

They also discovered that another estate agent named Mustafa S. had allegedly kept Yenisoy prisoner in an apartment in Ankara until 7th May, when the elderly man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

He was diagnosed with COVID-19 and died in the intensive care unit the following day.

The cousins claimed in their petition to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ankara that Mustafa S. had infected their elderly relative with COVID-19 in order to kill him.

They added in the petition that the same suspect had allegedly had him buried in a cemetery for people with no living relatives underneath a gravestone marked by a number, as seen in this photo.

They also noted that six-figure sums had been transferred from the victim’s bank account to other people’s accounts on the day he died and two days later. They believe this was the work of Haydar Y.

The cousins asked the Prosecutor’s Office to charge 16 individuals variously with ‘establishing an organisation with the aim of committing a crime’, ‘planning murder’, ‘deprivation of liberty’ and ‘qualified fraud’.

It is unclear what the status is of the investigation.
