The victim, identified as 26-year-old Kerlyn Tiepo Zanon, was allegedly knifed in the neck by her partner Eduardo da Costa.

The horror unfolded as Zanon, who was 10 weeks pregnant, argued furiously with the 31-year-old at their home in Erval Velho, Santa Catarina State on 27th March.

The slaying was discovered when the suspect’s father, who lives nearby, heard the woman’s cries for help and rushed to the house, where he found her dead.

He and some neighbours then grabbed his son and held him until police officers arrived on the scene.

The officers retrieved the victim’s body, and the suspect’s mother was taken to Santa Terezinha University Hospital in nearby Joacaba in a state of shock.

After his arrest, the suspect told the police that he had no recollection of what had happened, claiming that he was under the influence of drugs at the time.

A Civil Police spokesperson told local media: “The suspect claimed that he does not remember the event and that he only remembers his father trying to hold him and seeing his wife’s body on the floor, without knowing what happened.”

“He also said that there was no argument with his partner, in addition to confessing to having used drugs like cocaine for several years.”

The victim’s devastated family told the police that there had been no problems between the couple.

Investigators are now working to determine the motive for the crime.
