Citys Rat-Catch Scheme To Prevent COVID Mix-Up

A Philippine city is offering cash rewards for residents to catch rats to stop the spread of a bacterial infection that is getting confused with COVID-19.

The authorities in the city of Marikina in Metropolitan Manila in the Philippines have waged war against the bacterial infection leptospirosis because the sufferers’ symptoms can easily be confused with the novel coronavirus.

The city authorities have reportedly set aside a PHP 50,000 (GBP 796) budget for the scheme.

Vice mayor and doctor Marion Andres said the cash incentive for each resident would depend on the size of each rodent caught.

Andres added: “Many people are hunting for rats in the Philippines, but this one gives an incentive. Some of its [leptospirosis] symptoms could be mistaken for COVID-19 during diagnosis.

“Sometimes it exhibits fever, body aches, which people can mistake for COVID-19.”

Andres said: “This is an incentive for all our citizens. We have declared rats our public enemy number one, so we can help people be healthy.”

Leptospirosis is a blood infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira. Common symptoms include headaches, muscle pains, and fevers, although some carriers could experience severe symptoms such as bleeding in the lungs and meningitis.

Both wild and domestic animals can spread the disease, most commonly rodents.
