A one-year-old girl has been pronounced dead after being stabbed with scissors by her Chinese father who then stabbed himself several times as well.

The incident happened in the the Mongkul Guesthouse in a village in the Takhmao municipality in Combodia’s Kandal province on Tuesday. (24 November)

The one-year-old girl, named Totor, was murdered after an alleged argument between her father, identified as 30-year-old Chinese man named Pin Phin and the mother, 30-year-old Cambodian Thong Chanreah.

According to local media, the couple had a rocky relationship and the girl’s mother had run away to the Mongkul Guesthouse after a recent dispute, where she was visited by her husband and daughter approximately 10 days ago and who then stayed there until the day of the incident.

On the day of the incident, the couple had yet another falling-out where the agitated mother left the guesthouse, leaving the little girl with her father, who then attacked her with a pair of scissors.

According to a statement from the Child Protection Unit, the victim’s uncle witnessed the incident and immediately took the child to the Kandal Provincial Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Police soon arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect after taking him to the same hospital as his daughter to be treated for his self-inflicted injuries that were non-life-threatening.

The police along with the homicide and forensic units have collected evidence from the crime scene and are currently conducting further investigations on the case.

It is confirmed in the CPU’s official statement that the suspect is to be charged with aggravated murder.
