This group of childhood friends has been involved in a tragic car accident that killed two and caused another to lose her baby after 33 weeks of pregnancy after COVID-19 travel restrictions were lifted in Argentina.

The accident occurred on Route 56 in the eastern Argentine province of Buenos Aires at around 10pm on Friday 20th November, and five people are still receiving treatment in hospital.

The four friends have been identified as Charo Alvarez Amado, 26, Sofia Duro, 26, Florencia Barrios, 25, and Micaela Crino Pacher, 25 and were all from the city of La Plata in Buenos Aires Province.

According to local reports, the girls were driving to the coastal resort city of Pinamar to enjoy a long weekend at a friend’s beach house as they had been anxiously waiting to celebrate the lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Sofia was driving a white Renault Clio when they had a head-on collision with a family in a red Volkswagen Fox.

The Volkswagen occupants were identified as driver Juan Manuel Luder, 26, Maria Luder, 25, and Maria Silvina D’amico, 61, who were all taken to the San Roque de Dolores Hospital where they are still in intensive care.

Both Sofia and Charo died upon impact as they were sitting in the driver seat and passenger seat respectively.

Florencia, who was 33 weeks pregnant, had to undergo an emergency caesarean section and lost her baby in the Ana Rosa Gutierrez de Madariaga Hospital. She also suffered breaks in her tibia, humerus and pelvis.

Micaela was taken to the same centre as Florencia but was later transported to another hospital. No further information has been given on her condition.

The events leading up to the accident remain unclear as the authorities continue to investigate.

According to local sources, Route 56 is known locally as ‘death road’ because it only has one lane going in either direction.

Construction work is being carried out to expand it into a motorway which is expected to finish in November next year.
