The incident was filmed in the municipality of Guaxupe, in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais on 10th November.

The mother had driven with her two-year-old son to the local hospital. Upon returning to the car, the boy got inside first and spotted the snake inside the car, warning his mother, who quickly called the emergency services.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and identified the snake as a jararaca (Bothrops jararaca), a highly venomous pit viper endemic to South America.

Footage shows the firefighters using grabbing sticks to pick up the snake and put it into a container.

The animal, which was unhurt, was released in a forest far from residential areas.

According to the fire department, many animals have fled forest fires to the city.

Last week, firefighters captured two large boa constrictors in a home and a hardware store and an anteater on someone’s porch.

A 2020 survey has revealed there has been an increase of 28% in the capture of wild animals compared to 2019 in Minas Gerais.

According to biologist Sergeant Bruno Bicalho: “This is related to growing urbanisation. The fact that human beings move towards rural areas in wild environments makes animals look for new shelters and, in this search, human beings’ interaction with animals increases.”
