Chicago Teenager Arrested After Shooting Man Dead In Carjacking

A teenager has been arrested in Chicago on suspicion of murder after he allegedly shot a man dead in a carjacking in which he fired six shots before stealing the vehicle.

Hader Garcia, 18, was arrested for the murder of Richard Robinette, 36, in the city of Chicago in the Midwestern US state of Illinois on Thursday, 17th February.

The suspect was reportedly arrested after sharing a selfie online that allegedly showed him holding a firearm, which the police were able to link to a fatal SUV carjacking that took place at the Portage Park intersection at around 3am on Saturday, 18th December.

In a tribute to the dead man, a man claiming to be his childhood friend and going by the handle ‘Andrew Anderson’, wrote on Facebook: “Found out today one of my first childhood friends has past.” (sic)

He added: “Richard Robinette you will be missed. You were the first friend I had when I moved to fox lake…everyone said the same thing you brought all of us together”.

Chicago prosecutors allege that Garcia shared a photograph of himself online in which he can allegedly be seen holding a black, nine-millimetre handgun.

Garcia was first arrested last month after police allegedly caught him driving another stolen vehicle, but because the victim in that case could not formally identify the suspect, prosecutors could only charge him with possession of a stolen vehicle.

But after a police officer reportedly recognised the suspect from previous interactions, a firearm shell casing found in the recently carjacked vehicle, reportedly an Acura, proved to be a match with the six shots that killed Robinette.

According to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department, the suspect was arrested after being “identified as the offender who, on December 18, 2021, shot and killed a 36-year-old male who was inside a vehicle, stopped at a red light in the 4700 block of W. Irving Park Road.”

Garcia is being held without bail on a charge of first-degree murder. He has reportedly been assigned a court-appointed lawyer.
