The costume company from the HBO series ‘Chernobyl’ has announced they will be donating their collection of face masks and protective equipment to medics battling COVID-19.

Spanish company Peris Costumes will reportedly use their workshops in the capital Madrid and Portuguese capital Lisbon to produce additional masks and protective gear for key workers.

Spain has the second-highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world after the US, and the second-highest number of deaths after Italy.

The costume company produced protective gear for a large number of cast members and extras for the filming of the ‘Chernobyl’ miniseries.

Odilie Dicks-Mireaux, who worked as the head costume designer, received a Primtetime Emmy Award nomination for outstanding period costume design.

The company’s CEO Javier Toledo called the donation “a drop in the ocean”, but added that “everyone at Peris Madrid and Peris Lisbon is playing their part so that this aid becomes a reality”.

He added: “We want our donation to be a humble contribution to this Dante-esque situation on behalf of the film industry, television and theatre as a whole.”

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster took place in April 1986 when around 49,000 people were evacuated, mainly from the city of Pripyat in northern Ukraine, a ghost town today.

The exclusion zone was later increased to a 30-kilometre (19-mile) radius and a further 68,000 people were evacuated from the wider area.

Last year, the nuclear disaster was dramatised in the hit miniseries ‘Chernobyl’ starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard and Emily Watson.

The show depicted some of the lesser known stories of the disaster, including the efforts of the firefighters who were the first responders on the scene and a team of miners who dug a critical tunnel under Reactor 4 which exploded during a safety test.
