This chilling footage shows how a lad screamed in pain after he took a stray bullet to the stomach while watching a police chase.

The 18-year-old was standing in front of a grocery store in Guaruja, Sao Paulo state, south-eastern Brazil, on 27th December as the horror unfolded.

The footage shows how a police patrol car drives past Jeferson Soares da Silva Faria and another lad as they look out onto the street.

But a split-second later, Jeferson can be seen clasping his stomach and screaming in terror as he realises he has been hit by a wayward bullet.

Both lads are then seen running inside.

Military Police reported that the gunshot was fired by one of two armed men who had noticed the police car approaching.

The officers returned fire, but the crooks managed to flee the scene and evade arrest.

The injured teenager was rescued by the officers and taken to a local Emergency Department, still conscious.

After receiving first aid, he was transferred to Hospital Santo Amaro, where he underwent an operation to remove the bullet.

At the time of reporting, he was still recovering in hospital in a stable condition.

Public Security officials in Sao Paulo state said a number of bullets were seized from the scene and sent for forensic analysis.

Police in Guaruja are investigating the case as attempted murder.
