This is the moment a stray cat interrupts prayers at a mosque by running amok among worshippers before charging at the imam and jumping over his head.

The bizarre scenes were recorded in the Eregli Central Mosque in the Karamursel district of Kocaeli province of Turkey as imam Fatih Mehmet Koca read the Quran.

In the video, the ginger cat can be seen sprinting around the mosque as Koca sits at the front.

The imam continues reading from the Quran as the cat goes out of view before the feline reappears and heads straight towards him.

The cat then jumps up and over Koca’s head as he flinches and onlookers can be seen walking away from the imam.

Local media report Koca continued leading the prayers and readings as the cat was removed from the mosque.

The incident came after Muslims had eaten their evening meal, known as iftar, after sunset as they are fasting during daylight hours for the month of Ramadan.

Local media report the cat is a stray.

Karamursel was heavily damaged during the devastating 1999 Izmit earthquake which rocked the eastern part of Marmara Region, with 164 people losing their lives in Karamursel and many more were left homeless.
