This is the moment prison staff catch a cat with two mobile phones attached to its neck in an apparent attempt to smuggle the devices in for convicts.

The incident took place at the La Reforma prison in Chacarita in the small Central American country of Costa Rica following a five-hour operation to catch the unwitting feline smuggler.

Reports said that the cat escaped into the sewer system when it was first chased by prison guards.

Prison director Pablo Bertozzi told local media: “It was very difficult because the cat went into a sewer at a depth of around 100 metres and we had to wait a long time for it to reappear.”

When prison staff finally managed to catch the cat, they reportedly found two mobile phones, a charger and SIM cards attached to it.

The incident led to a thorough search of the prison’s facilities and guards found a further 17 phones hidden in a pavilion, according to local media.

A prison statement said: “We are constantly dealing with phones and drugs entering the institution. We carry out daily intelligence operations to dismantle the activities of criminal gangs operating inside the country’s prisons.”

A similar incident involving a cat carrying two mobile phones into the La Reforma prison occurred in March 2018.

In February this year, another cat was caught with drugs and a phone charger inside La Reforma prison.
