This couple has won GBP 1 million on the Spanish lottery after the husband spent three years without work to stay home and help his wife who suffers with a rare disease.

The couple lives in the town and municipality of Punta Umbria in the province of Huelva in the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia.

Emiliano Martin and Irene Dominguez spoke with local media after they heard they won EUR 1.2 million (GBP 1.09 million) on the ‘El Gordo’ (‘The Fat One’) Christmas lottery yesterday (22 December).

Martin explained that his father-in-law bought five tickets with the same number and gave them three as Dominguez is his only daughter, and gave a further two tickets to a family in the capital Madrid after purchasing them when they first became available in July this year.

Christmas lottery tickets can be expensive in Spain and are often bought in groups or gifted as presents over the holidays.

According to the newspaper Huelva Informacion, Martin said: “The prize comes at a very necessary time, I am an electrical technician, but I left work three years ago to take care of my wife who was diagnosed with a rare disease, systemic sclerosis.” (https://bit.ly/2M3h8qn)
