These images show a car which has been written off after a live cow crash-landed on its bonnet and windscreen on a motorway.

The freak accident happened on the Beijing-Kunming Expressway over Qi County in North China’s Shanxi Province at around 1am local time on 15th January.

Arriving officers found the badly mangled SUV parked in the outermost lane or the motorway, its bonnet having been ripped open and its windscreen shattered.

The SUV’s roof was caved in, and its injured driver was taken to hospital by paramedics, the authorities said.

Motorway police said they found the large cow two lanes across. The injured animal was lifted into another lorry and driven away, but it is unclear whether it survived the ordeal.

The animal’s owner, who has not been named, told police he was transporting a lorry full of cows when they began trampling around inside the tight cargo hold before one of them broke out.

The animal fell towards the motorway, right onto the SUV which was following closely behind the lorry during the accident, for which the owner has said he was willing to take full responsibility.

The incident was still being investigated at the time of writing.
