This is the shocking moment a pedestrian is forced to decide in a split second whether to leap left or right to escape serious injury when a speeding car mounts the pavement.

The incident occurred in Miasteczko Krajenskie in the central Polish region of Greater Poland Voivodeship at around 6.30am, and led to the arrest of the 21-year-old Volkswagen Polo driver.

In the CCTV footage, the burly pedestrian is seen walking along the pavement in the dark before suddenly finding himself caught between the male driver’s headlights.

The man panics and after clearly unsure which way to jump as the car hurtles towards him – he eventually leaps to the left side of the pavement.

The decision happens just as the motorist swerves to the right and hits a small tree before rejoining the road with the pedestrian leaning back against the wall in shock at his close brush with death or serious injury.

Reports said that the motorist drove away from the scene following the near miss, but the local authorities studied the CCTV footage and tracked down the 21-year-old suspect.

Meanwhile, the pedestrian explained that he did not report the incident to the police because he was still in shock.

According to local media, the motorist – who only passed his driving test in December 2018 – has since apologised to the man.

The case of reckless driving has reportedly been referred to court.
