A primary school has found itself embroiled in a hygiene scandal after canteen staff were filmed washing dirty dishes with laundry powder and scrubbing spoons on the kitchen floor using a hose and their feet.

Damning footage filmed in the cafeteria of Dongfeng Elementary School in the city of Zhuanghe, which is in Liaoning Province in north-eastern China, shows uniformed employees cleaning up at the end of the day.

In the video, staff members are seen pouring a white powdery substances into basins full of used dishes and eating utensils, while the powder, which is said to be laundry detergent, can also be seen on the wet floors.

Staff members at the primary school’s canteen are also accused of failing to properly sterilise the pupils’ cutlery – because the machine to do it is broken.

They are also accused of scrubbing spoons with their feet, with video showing them moving and stepping on the utensils while wearing waterproof rubber shoes.

A statement by the Zhuanghe government on 17th September said the school’s headmaster had been suspended, and a temporary official had been placed in charge to oversee day-to-day activities.

A thorough inspection will also be done of the school canteen, including an inspection of the foods it provides the children as well as all its kitchenware.

A report on the investigation’s results should be expected in the coming days, the statement said.
