This five-year-old boy with cancer who makes Spider-Man and Mickey Mouse keyrings to help pay for his treatment has been given signed football shirts by Mexican midfielder Luis Alfonso ‘Chaka’ Rodriguez.

One will be kept by the boy to wear himself and the other will be sold to help raise funds.

Loving family members set up a Facebook page called ‘Cadena de Oraciones por Gian Carlos’ (‘Prayer Chain for Gian Carlos’) where they keep followers updated with the boy’s cancer battle and raise money towards his treatment.

Gian Carlos’ father Jose Alberto Gamez Luna, from Santa Cecilia in the city of Monterrey in the north-eastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, told Central European News (CEN): “He makes keyrings whenever he can, and friends and neighbours have been lending a hand.”

According to the boy’s father, they have also staged raffles and events to raise money for the five-year-old’s expensive treatment.

Mexican football club Tigres UANL even donated a couple of signed shirts to be used as raffle prizes.

Star player Luis Alfonso ‘Chaka’ Rodriguez, who also plays for the Mexico national team, brought the shirts to the hospital in person and posed for snaps with the little boy.

Gamez Luna wrote on social media: “‘Chaka’ Rodriguez fulfilled his promise and brought a shirt for you and another one for the raffle.”

The family said on the social network that the boy’s face is swollen from the chemotherapy sessions he is undergoing.

According to reports, little Gian was diagnosed with brain cancer last year after suffering severe headaches, dizzy spells and stomach pains.

Gamez Luna said that the family “has to raise at least 64,000 MXN (2,650 GBP) every month” to pay for the Crizotinib (Xalkori) anti-cancer drug.

Brave Gian is producing fun keyrings featuring loved characters such as Mickey Mouse, Spider-Man, Batman and Donald Duck as well as badges of the football clubs CF Monterrey and Tigres UANL.
