Brazil icon Cafu has said “in terms of technical skill, there is no player that is superior to Neymar, not even Messi”.
Two-time World Cup champion Cafu, 49, made the comments during a Skype interview with sports news outlet ‘Fox Sports Brasil’ where he hailed Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Neymar, 28, as the world’s best when it comes to technical ability.
Cafu said: “Today, as far as technical skill, there is no player that is superior to Neymar, not even Messi, of who I am a big fan of.
“What the world wants is to watch Neymar play football. For him to dedicate himself to football” referring to the star’s antics off the pitch which land him in the headlines.
Cafu went on to emphasise Neymar’s importance in the Brazil squad saying: “When he is doing well, the Brazil national team does well” adding that “he is a player that was called upon to make a difference in Brazilian football.
“The time for maturity has passed, he is now a leader in Paris Saint-Germain and the world’s most expensive player.”
Neymar was bought by PSG for a record 222 million EUR (206 million GBP) in August 2017 from Barcelona. The Brazil star has helped the Parisian club win Ligue 1 both seasons since his arrival but has struggled to help them make an impact in the Champions League,
Despite Neymar’s success at the club, the forward has been pushing to return to Barcelona since last summer’s transfer window even reportedly telling PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi “I don’t want to play PSG.
“I want to go back home, where I never should’ve left” referring to Barcelona according to Spanish newspaper ‘Mundo Deportivo’.
The two clubs were in long talks but a deal was never reached.
Local media report PSG and Barcelona are continuing their negotiations which could see Neymar playing alongside his former teammate Lionel Messi, 32, next season.
