This is the moment a cab driver accidentally impales his own windscreen after driving into a 10-foot metal pole being carried on a builder’s shoulder.

The dramatic incident happened as taxi driver Huang Haoyong’s customers was riding in the front passenger seat on 19th November.

Traffic camera footage from the city of Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province in north-western China, shows Mr Huang travelling in the outer lane of a thoroughfare when he approaches a group of workers standing by the roadside.

One of the workmen, who is carrying the 10-foot pole on his right shoulder, loses his footing as the metal object tips backwards.

This happens at the precise moment Mr Huang’s taxi approaches, and the metal pipe shoots into the cabbie’s windscreen, narrowly avoiding both him and his passenger.

Mr Huang said: “I had no time to react. I would’ve swerved away if I had.

“I got a big fright. It scared the wits out of my customer, too.”

Lanzhou traffic police were called to deal with the aftermath of the near-miss, which left a large hole in Mr Huang’s windscreen.

The workman’s employers agreed to settle the matter privately by offering the cabbie damages in the amount of 1,100 RMB (120 GBP).

No further punishment is expected from the authorities.
