This is the moment a brazen coach rider grabs a bus steering wheel on a motorway and then sits on the driver’s lap before he is subdued by a group of other passengers.

The heart-stopping incident happened as the coach carrying nearly 30 passengers was travelling in the fast lane of the Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway over the city of Huangshi in Central China’s Hubei Province.

Security camera footage dated 14th January shows the passenger, who has yet to be named, suddenly walking to the front of the bus and grabbing the driver Mr Peng’s steering wheel.

The vehicle, which was driving off Edong Yangtze River Bridge at the time, is forced to brake on the motorway as the suspect threatens to crash the crowded bus.

According to Mr Peng, the suspect wanted to go to the city of Daye, but the coach was headed to the county of Xishui roughly 40 miles away.

After realising his mistake, the passenger demanded that Mr Peng drive off the motorway and let him off, but his request was refused, leading to the altercation.

In the video, Mr Peng can be seen stopping the bus, but the suspect holds onto his steering wheel and even sits on his lap in a bid to get his way.

He argues with other passengers who eventually drag him away from the front of the bus, pinning him to a nearby seat.

Mr Peng said his bus key was snapped in half during the scuffle, but he and other passengers managed to start the engine again and drive to Huashuilu Police Station in nearby Xishui County.

The suspect was detained and then handed over to Huangshi authorities, as the incident happened within their jurisdiction.

The man remains in custody and faces charges for endangering public safety, reports said.
