This is the shocking moment a bus full of passengers travels the wrong way down a busy Spanish motorway.

According to local media, the bus driver travelled in the wrong direction for over 11 kilometres (6.8 miles) between the areas of Moncloa-Aravaca and Pozuelo de Alarcon in the central Spanish capital Madrid.

The 42-year-old bus driver reportedly went through a security barrier and entered the wrong lane, driving nearly seven miles on the busy motorway in the opposite direction.

In the CCTV footage, the bus is seen travelling the wrong way along a high-occupancy vehicle lane in the central section of the motorway.

Two white cars pass the bungling driver before the camera zooms in and another green bus is seen approaching in the opposite direction.

The other bus driver frantically flashes his lights to alert the 42-year-old of his mistake.

Local media said that he avoided at least 25 vehicles during the incident and no one was reported as hurt.

Numerous motorists and bus passengers called the emergency services to report the incident.

After a while, traffic police stopped the bus and tested the driver for alcohol and drugs, which were reportedly both negative.

However, they have confirmed that they are investigating the bizarre incident and whether the driver was culpable of reckless driving and putting other people’s lives at risk.
