This is the not-so-romantic moment a fire collar from a sky lantern falls on a woman’s face causing burns as she tried to raise it into the air.
The night-time footage recorded in Fuyang, Anhui Province, China, shows two women smilingly trying to launch the lantern.
But as one of them tries to fling the lantern into the air, the fire collar inside falls right on her face.
She drops to the ground in pain, holding her face, as the collar fire still burns beside her.
The woman who was with her and several other people can be seen rushing to help as the footage ends.
Local media reported that the unnamed woman suffered burns in the incident.
Netizens expressed their worries after the video was posted on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, saying that the sky lanterns pose threat and should be banned.
User ‘Azer (FM94.3)’ wrote: “I reject this thing because I don’t know what the consequences would be if I floated away. I’m telling the truth, it’s not as romantic as it seems.”
And ‘Arita downhill’ said: “Fortunately, it was your face that was burned. I would feel even more distressed if it burned someone else’s house.”
Sky lanterns, also called Kongming lanterns, are hot-air balloons that were used in ancient China as means of signals for sending messages, as well as warnings of impending danger.
In more recent times, lanterns have been seen as a sign of letting go of the past and looking for new love in the future.
Some countries, like Vietnam, have banned the lanterns, often blamed for causing fires when they drop out of the sky.
