Burglars who apparently thought they were stealing valuable artwork escaped with what was really a funeral urn containing the ashes of an elderly woman’s husband.
The burglary took place in the rural community of Arendonk in the Belgian Vince of Antwerp when the crooks broke into a chalet owned by the woman OAP.
Her family have now taken to Facebook to post an image of the urn in the hope that it will be recovered and returned.
They said it was a steel urn in the shape of a lotus flower, and that they believe the burglars did not know it was an urn used for the dead man’s ashes,
They think they may have thought it was a work of art, and were probably looking for something valuable to sell because they had also stolen the woman’s lawnmower.
Police agreed that the theft of the lawnmower meant it appeared the crooks looking for valuable items, and hope that the stolen urn with its distinctive shape will now be spotted when it is eventually offered up for sale.
The name of the woman and her deceased husband was not revealed.
