This is the moment a bungling woman driver loses control of her car and sends a pedestrian waiting by the side of the road flying before shooting into a tree.

The accident was captured on traffic cameras in Jiangjin District in China’s south-western Chongqing Municipality on 7th February during the Chinese New year holidays.

The footage shows the victim surnamed Liu, 42, standing by the roadside next to a riverbank and staring at her phone while waiting to be picked up.

The driver surnamed Zhao, 22, suddenly speeds into camera shot and makes a complete hash of her attempt at a right turn.

Liu looks up from her phone and spots the wildly understeering car, and she starts running away in a bid to avoid being hit.

But Zhao’s silver saloon continues to turn in her direction and ultimately slams right into the back of the poor pedestrian, sending her flying down the embankment.

The car crashes to a halt against a tree, with authorities called to the scene minutes later.

The police say the woman driver remained at the scene while her passenger accompanied the victim, who suffered several broken ribs, to Chongqing Qijiang People’s Hospital.

Investigators say Zhao was “not familiar” with the road and realised too late that she was meant to turn left instead of right.

In her attempt to turn the car around, she lost control and crashed into the victim, who is not in any life-threatening condition despite nursing broken ribs and bruised lungs.

Further investigation is under way.
