Spooks from Israel’s national intelligence agency Mossad have been left red-faced after buying 100,000 coronavirus testing kits which were later branded unusable.

Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, revealed that they had bought 100,000 testing kits for COVID-19 from two countries which they do not share diplomatic ties with.

However, when the kits arrived in Israel the health ministry quickly found that they were “unusable” as they were missing a patented liquid which the swabs need to be placed into before being screened for COVID-19.

The Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Health Itamar Grotto said: “Unfortunately, what Mossad has delivered is not what we are in need of.”

The tests cannot be administered without the liquid and a spokesperson for Israel’s emergency services said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was using his connections to try to obtain the liquid.

Middle East security analyst Yossi Melman said hundreds of businesses in Israel are trying to buy test kits to help meet the shortage in the country.

The sources of the tests kits, which include test tubes for throat checks, have not been reported and it is unclear how much they cost.

Israel has had 677 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Friday.
