This is the moment a thief fumbles with a gun hidden in his trousers and appears to shoot himself during a bungled robbery attempt on a city bus.

The incident was filmed by a bus CCTV camera in the municipality of Tlajomulco de Zuniga in the western Mexican state of Jalisco and was later widely circulated on social media.

In the black and white footage, two young men are seen approaching the back of the bus as one of them takes a seat.

The standing suspect tries to remove what appears to be a long gun hidden in his trousers but struggles to take the weapon out.

The firearm suddenly goes off and the man sits down as stunned passengers look round at the pair.

At the next stop, the two men get off the bus and the burly suspect appears to be injured or disorientated by the sudden gunshot.

It is currently unclear whether the local authorities have managed to identify the two suspects in the video footage.

Reports also did not mention whether the man injured himself with his firearm. Local media report he was about to rob the passengers with the weapon.

The investigation into the alleged robbery attempt is ongoing.
