A McDonald’s customer who was shot in the face by a 16-year-old brandishing a sawn-off shotgun has been praised after he managed to disarm the masked teenager and pin him down until cops arrived.

Local media report the unnamed teenager went into the McDonald’s restaurant in Hennebont in the northwestern French department of Morbihan with the sawn-off shotgun.

Reports state the teenage gunman who had his face concealed went into the fast-food restaurant and demanded money from the till.

The people at the scene reportedly thought it was a joke. But after their refusal, the gunman fired towards the ceiling.

Reports state an unnamed man in his 40s who was a customer threw a chair at the gunman’s face and the criminal responded by firing the weapon, injuring the man in his cheek.

The robber then tried to flee but was reportedly pinned down disarmed by the wounded man and another customer who came to the rescue. He was tied up until the police arrived and arrested him.

An unnamed witness told local media: “I was about to pay for my order when I heard shouting, ‘It’s a robbery, let’s get out, let’s get out.’

“Then I saw all the staff going out the back door. I heard two shots. I moved my car back to make myself less visible because I felt that if I moved forward or tried to run away I was taking a chance on being seen by the robber.”

About 30 policemen and firemen were mobilised in the incident and an emergency medical-psychological support cell was set up, with the care of about twenty people.

The injured client was taken to the Lorient hospital in relative urgency. McDonald’s paid tribute to him by saluting “his courage”

As the police investigations are still ongoing, the Lorient Public Prosecutor’s Office does not intend, at this stage, to communicate on this case.

It is unclear if the suspect has been charged.
