This is the moment brave runners are forced to jog backwards to protect their faces from being hit by the force of a hailstorm during a popular race.

The occurred during the 55th edition of the Behobia-San Sebastian race which runs between the small neighbourhood of Behobia to the coastal city of San Sebastian located in the autonomous community of the Basque Country in north-eastern Spain.

This year’s edition of the race, which is around 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) long, took place this Sunday 10th November and included over 27,000 runners.

The video shows the moment some runners were forced to run backwards during a hailstorm to avoid being hit in the face as hail can be seen flying through the air in strong winds.

Others can be seen trying to cover their faces with umbrellas, their hands or by simply looking away.

A voice in the background can be heard saying “my goodness” impressed by the storm as she watches the runners run through the hail.

No accidents or injuries were reported and the race continued with no further incident.

Moroccan-born Chakit Lachgar, who has been living in Basque Country since 2008, was the winner in the men’s category while Spanish runner Gema Barrachina won in the women’s.
