A 60-year-old British tourist has suffered significant injuries to his groin area after being hit by a boat’s propeller while swimming on holiday off the coast of Majorca.

The incident took place while the unnamed British tourist was swimming about 200 metres (656 feet) from the shore while enjoying a day out in Puerto Portals in the village of Portals Nous in the Majorcan municipality of Calvia located in the eastern Spanish region of the Balearic Islands.

The emergency services confirmed that the incident took place at around 4.20pm in the cove known as Punta Negra and paramedics and members of the Local Police and Civil Guard were quickly sent to the scene.

A Civil Guard spokesperson told Central European News (CEN): “The tourist was swimming about 200 metres off the coast when he was injured by a passing boat.”

After reportedly being wounded by the vessel’s propeller, the 60-year-old man was transferred to the Hospital Universitario Son Espases in the island’s capital of Palma.

The unnamed Brit reportedly sustained serious injuries to the right side of his inguinal region as well as his foot and ankle.

The Spanish Civil Guard has launched an investigation and both the injured tourist and boat owner will be quizzed by officers during the day.

The probe is ongoing.
