A 31-year-old British tourist has drowned off the Spanish coast after falling from the pedalo he had hired before he was swept out to sea.

The incident took place on Sunday at around 5.40pm off the Regueral Beach in the municipality of Cambrils in the province of Tarragona located in the north-eastern region of Catalonia.

The tourist was also said to be clearly struggling in the water as the witness called the emergency services.

Five Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) patrol cars and a team from the Local Police were sent to the beach on the Spanish Costa Dorada.

Three ambulances were also sent to the beach and paramedics performed CPR on the rescued tourist, but were unable to bring the person back to life.

According to reports, the beach had lifeguards operating during the incident and the displayed flags were green, suggesting the sea was safe.

It is currently unclear whether the local authorities are investigating the incident.

Last month, a five-year-old Georgian girl died off the La Pineda Beach in the same region when her rubber ring was dragged out to sea.

On 30th April, an 83-year-old man drowned off the coast of Llosa in Cambrils near where the British tourist died.
