Locals including a British man got a free fish supper after hacking chunks of flesh off a large tuna fish that had been swept ashore by strong waves caused by Storm Gloria.

The incident where some of the locals are seen at work cutting up a fish was filmed on the town promenade in L’Ampolla in the eastern Spanish region of Catalonia and the footage was later shared on Twitter where it has been viewed nearly 100,000 times.

Reports said that around 10 tuna fish from a nearby fish farm were swept ashore by the harsh weather conditions.

As seen in the footage, residents took advantage of the situation and eagerly hacked off chunks of tuna to take home.

Reports said that the Balfego company operates a fish farm close to the shore which specialises in tuna.

The tuna escaped after tanks were reportedly damaged during the storm and a company spokesperson said: “So far we haven’t been able to evaluate the extent of the damage caused because the sea levels are still too high.”

Ryan, a British man from Sheffield who has lived in L’Ampolla for the last 10 years, took advantage of the free tuna he found just outside his home, telling Spanish newspaper El Pais: “This is the best fish ever. I don’t mind where it came from.”

According to local media, Storm Gloria has battered many regions in Spain, leaving 10 people dead while six others are still missing.

British tourist Ben Garland, 25, reportedly went missing after being swept out to sea on the holiday island of Ibiza.
