This young man posted “living is the greatest adventure there is” before drowning at a tourist spot on the Brazilian coast.
Uilgner Rodrigues, 30, drowned in a natural pool at the tourist spot of Buraco Azul in the municipality of Cruz in the Brazilian state of Ceara on 21st March.
In one of his last social media posts, Rodrigues shared a video of him travelling down a slide during his trip to the state with his fiancee Bianca Carvalho with the message: “Living is the greatest adventure there is.”
Hours late, he was found dead in a natural pool at Buraco Azul. Witnesses said the young man was underwater for about 30 minutes.
Two lifeguards and other visitors at the scene tried to locate him in the lake and eventually found him motionless in the water.
He was reportedly visiting the area on holiday with his fiancee after booking the trip last year.
Rodrigues shared several posts of his time in Ceara State, calling the area “a paradise” and describing how much he loved travelling with his partner.
Carvalho said after his death: “I wanted to share life with you, but I thank you for choosing me to be together with you in the realisation of a dream, and for having experienced a beautiful love.”
She also thanked people who supported her during this “difficult time”.
Carvalho wrote: “Thank you so much for everything, we were looking forward to this trip, and we decided to choose you to be part of these moments of joy. And I have no words to thank you for being here with me, in such a difficult time.”
Brazilian actor Bruno Miranda, who was present at the tourist spot at the time, criticised the security at the site on social media: “Another death here at Buraco Azul. A man drowned with no structure in place to help him. The guy was over 20 minutes underwater. The site’s tourist helicopter refused to transport the victim and an ambulance did not arrive at the scene.”
The incident remains under investigation.
Uilgner will be buried at Vicente de Carvalho Cemetery later today (24th March).
