Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champ Missing After Chartered Plane Crashes Into Ocean, Wife Says Stay Positive

This Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion and businessman has been named as one of the people missing after a charter plane he was flying on crashed into the ocean, with his wife asking people to “stay positive” as the search continues.

Martial artist Sergio Alves Dias Filho, also known as Serginho, is among two people currently missing after the chartered flight they were on, a twin-engine Piper PA-34-220T Seneca III flying between Campinas and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, crashed on the night of Wednesday, 24th November.

The second person has been named as 20-year-old co-pilot Jose Porfirio de Brito Junior, who also owns the aircraft. A third person, 27-year-old pilot Gustavo Calcado Carneiro, was found dead on Thursday, 25th November.

Serginho, who also reportedly owns a vehicle armouring company, reportedly chartered the plane, which crashed into an area of open sea near the coastal town of Ubatuba, which, like Campinas, is located in the state of Sao Paulo. Some wreckage from the plane has reportedly been located.

Serginho is reported to be a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu national champion.

His wife Tatiana Fogaca has now spoken for the first time since the incident, and she said on Instagram: “Despite all the efforts of the authorities involved, to whom we dedicate our sincerest thanks, he has yet to be found.”

The authorities have mobilised soldiers and specialised units, according to local media, with the support of aircraft, boats and divers and the Brazilian Air Force. The disappearance was registered at 4.15am and the search operation began straight away.

Serginho is a brown belt in jiu-jitsu and competes for Gracie Barra Bandeirantes. In 2021, he took third place in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship, in the master category 4.
