This is the bizarre moment a suspected ‘crash-for-cash’ scammer allegedly throws himself at a taxi as shocked witnesses watch on in disbelief.

The incident happened outside Xuanwei Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China’s south-western province of Yunnan on 11th January.

A traffic camera showing the entrance to the hospital’s car park shows the male suspect, who has yet to be named, lingering on the road as an SUV turns next to him.

After the vehicle leaves, a taxi approaches, and the man appears to target the cabbie for his so-called crash-for-cash accident scam, which is known in Chinese as ‘pengci’, literally ‘touching porcelain’.

Before the taxi touches him, the man throws himself in the direction of the car and collapses on the ground in a heap, pretending to be injured, the video shows.

Witnesses at a nearby busstop watch on in stunned silence as the man lies in front of the taxi, which does not move as the video ends.

According to reports, the cabbie accused the suspect of attempting to scam him shortly after, and called local authorities to the scene.

The suspect was reportedly arrested and an investigation is ongoing.
