A five-year-old Cambodian boy has died while his gran is fighting for her life in hospital after they were attacked by wasps while cutting a palm tree.

The incident took place in the southern Cambodian province of Takeo while the 62-year-old grandmother, identified as Chen Oeurn, was cutting fronds from a palm tree to build a chicken coop.

The woman and her five-year-old grandson, identified as Morn Kakakda, struck a wasps’ nest and were immediately attacked, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Chuon Samang.

The 62-year-old woman remains in hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

The incident was witnessed by an unnamed neighbour.

Samang said: “While cutting the leaves, Oeurn accidentally hit a big nest of wasps hanging from the tree.

“Around 30 angry wasps immediately attacked both of them, inflicting multiple stings on their face, neck and chest.

“During the attack, Oeurn tried to rescue her grandson and carried him towards their house.

Samang added: “The boy died in the house shortly after.”

Distressing images show the young boy lying dead in his home shortly after the wasp attack.

The grandmother was found by neighbours who rushed her to a nearby hospital.

Following the incident, Samang reminded citizens to immediately seek medical attention if attacked by wasps as their sting can sometimes be fatal.
