This is the moment a huge out-of-control boat smashes through the barriers of a busy pedestrian promenade as shocked onlookers walk past and take photos.

The accident was captured by several witnesses on the banks of Huangpu River in Shanghai’s Xuhui District in East China.

According to the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, the incident occurred at 7:50pm local time on 5th June after the seagoing barge carrying sand collided with another vessel on the river.

The collision was heard by pedestrians on the promenade, and they watched and filmed as the cargo ship veered towards them, crashing through the balustrade.

The video shows some witnesses jumping out the way to safety, while others stand and record as the barge slams into the concrete promenade just a few feet ahead of them.

A section of roughly 30 feet of railings were damaged during the accident and had been sealed off, while the rest of the crowded waterfront remained open to the public.

The municipal maritime authority said neither vessel sustained critical damage, and no one on board was injured either.

Two patrol boats were sent to the scene of the accident, with both vessels later escorted away and moored at different locations.

The accident is still under investigation.
