A motorist who deliberately drove through a crowd of people walking across a pedestrian crossing faces the death penalty in China after he said he did it because he wanted to ‘get revenge on society’.

The shocking incident happened shortly before midday on Saturday in the city of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province.

A video camera shows the black coloured BMW accelerating towards a huge line of people that are using a pedestrian crossing at the time. The driver who was a hairdresser made no attempt to stop as he ploughed into the crowd at what was reportedly 108 km/h (67 mph).

The 32-year-old identified by the surname Liu then sped off leaving four people dead with a fifth dying later in hospital.

Five others were also injured some of them seriously.

Dalian’s deputy police chief Qu Bo said that the 32-year-old was being held on charges of ‘endangering public safety’ and could face the death penalty if found guilty.

He said the 32-year-old felt that he was a failure in life after an investment flop and blamed society in general, and decided to take revenge on it as a result. He did not say however why the man felt he was a failure or what the investment was that he had lost.

The motorist’s hi-speed escape ended when he crashed into another car at an intersection and fled before being caught by police around an hour later.
